It's mostly like working in a doctors office. Lots of blood draws, physicials, med passes for subtances that they don't want on the compound, routine health screenings, sick call for minor complaints. Pretty routine stuff. It's also very litiginous and there are a lot of rules and regulations to follow TO THE LETTER and it is somewhat paperwork heavy.

There's a balance that has to be struck between security of the prisoner and meeting medical needs. You really have to be careful to follow what security wants most of the time. I wouldn't recommend ever trusting an inmate. A good portion of them are sociopaths and are usually running some kind of con. Doesn't matter what it is, you just have to know up front that you cannot afford to trust them or bend the rules at all.

It's an okay job and it really doesn't require much more then a good background in family practice type medicine. I took a break from the hospital and worked corrections for a while. I had a pretty good time. I have to warn you though that some of nurses I ran into were worse sociopaths then the prisoners. Those few people were a trip.

I was told that if you have kids it is not a good idea to work at corrections or a jail. In some cases, if someone calls off and they cant find any to pick up the shift you will be required to stay and work a double.
