Hi everyone,

I am currently in my OB clinical, and am studying for our first exam. In our notes, our professor wrote that after a mother gives birth and you transfer her from L&D to Mother/Baby, when you give report to the mother/baby nurse, you should include age, gtpal, blood type and Rh, VDRL, hep B, rubella, and beta strep status. What in the world is VDRL???? I know what the rest is, but not that. Thanks!!

Specializes in Geriatrics/Oncology/Psych/College Health.

Syphillis status.

Syphillis. It is tested three times: at the beginning of the pregnancy, at about 28 weeks (with the one hour glucose tolerance test), and again before delivery. This information is included on the birth certificate as well.

Specializes in MICU.

There is a newer test for syphilis called RPR. If the RPR (or VDRL) is positive, then a confirmation MHA-TP is usually sent out. Although they both test for the same pathogen (Treponema pallidum), they are different methodologies.
