An RN and a doula, should I be a Montrice ?

I am a doula, and I am about to graduate with my BSN. I have considered pursuing becoming a montrice / monitirice, and am loaded with questions as I research.

If you are a montrice, could you please tell me more about:

1. how to become certified/ credentialed

2. what the legality is in regards to the nurse practice act

3. what is the scope of practice/ specific boundaries

4. how to obtain insurance

5. are you self employed or do you work for an obgyn/ cnm

6. how much to charge

7. how many clients/ month

8. is this different from private duty nursing

9. what resources are available/ professional organizations

I guess I am unclear, I thought a monitrice and a doula were the same thing?

ETA: just googled and understand the difference now. Don't know, but it would seem it's more in the scope of a midwife than an RN. Can someone with just an RN be a monatrice?

Hi! I see this is years later, but did you end up going the RN & montrice route? I became a doula this year and am also a pediatric RN. I just learned what a montrice is and it sounds really interesting! Could you share with me any info you learned? Thanks!

I have never offered my services marketed as a monitrice. To offer those services, it would be best to practice under a CNM or OB. Doula in the hospital, never at home.
I have worked in a 5000+ Birth per year setting as well as the clinic/ boutique home birth setting as a nurse. I have gained a lot of knowledge and wisdom. Also attended a quite a few doula births.

No matter what you say, you can never legally remove the fact you are a nurse. So laboring starts home with a woman is a chance for malpractice because her baby really should have heart tones ESPECIALLY is she is a VBAC.

if you can find an advanced healthcare provider that would give you standing orders to follow, a protocol, and access to herself ... I would HIGHLY recommend this over the doula role. Any day.
