Pitocin Use Post Delivery

Specialties Ob/Gyn

I'm just interested in knowing how many of you give Pitocin (10u) post delivery, either IM or IVP? And do you give it before or after the placenta delivers?

Thanks, RMH

give it after placenta is delivered. you can look in archives and find a few threads on this topic and the multiple ways pit is given:)

Specializes in OB, Telephone Triage, Chart Review/Code.

Also given after placenta delivers, into the IV bag.

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

We deliver 20 UNITS in one liter of LR via IV route---this is routine. We only give IM pit if heavy bleeding is happening NO IV is present to deliver it. This is not often. If we have to give pit IM, also we give 20 units.

20 units /1000 cc IV after placenta delivers, and then 10 units/1000cc until bleeding is minimal. I have also given 10-20 IM if no IV access.
