Hi everyone! So I am a last semester nursing student and I start practicum in a few weeks on the mother baby unit that I requested to be placed on. I am DYING to eventually have a job here after I graduate. Is there any advice anyone could give me to help increase my chances of landing a job in this department during practicum? Thanks so much!Meagan

Congrats! Show them what you're made of. Find out who the nurse manager is and make sure he/she knows who you are. They are in charge of hiring! Let them know you dream of working on their unit.

I just landed my preceptorship (same unit, hospital I like) because the nurse manager wants to see how I do there as a prospective employee. She offered to help me get a preceptorship there, and "hinted" that she hires new grads, and that she likes what she's seen of me in med/surg (total fluke that she went from being the nurse manager in med/surg to mother/baby in December- thank you, stars, for aligning!!). So this is why I say to get to know who the nurse manager is, and show her that you are a rock star.

Awesome! The same thing happened to me - I did my preceptorship on a Mother/Baby unit during my last semester of school and I now work there :) make sure you show your preceptor and the other nurses (as well as PCAs, secretaries) that you would be an asset to the unit. Help out the other nurses in any way you can (help them when you see they're busy, offer to do CBCs for them, etc). Make SURE you meet the director of the unit. During the last few weeks of my preceptorship, I emailed the director and thanked her for allowing me to precept there and told her how much I wished to work in that area. She emailed back and told me of an opening online and to apply for it. I did, interviewed, and got the job! Good luck!

go the extra mile, get to know the manager or nurse educator, be proactive and ask if there is a project you can do on the floor. Such as make an informational poster on a new issues
