Labor Support

I'm a recent new graduate nurse to L&D (soon to be on my own) and I'm wondering if anyone has good resources, such as videos or books, to help me expand my knowledge on labor support and breastfeeding? It would really help me feel more comfortable with those things if I had some more ideas because right now I just feel awkward and lost!

"The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" is a fantastic book; required reading for any La Leche League leader. I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is considering breastfeeding or is helping women who breastfeed. Be sure to get the latest edition, as it is frequently updated.

I'm sure there are good videos on YouTube as well. If you can, get in touch with a La Leche League leader in your area, and ask if you can attend some meetings. It'll be good experience!

Actually, if you're planning on helping other women, I would recommend "The Breastfeeding Answer Book" by LLLI, rather than The Womanly Art. Also, Jack Newman's book on breastfeeding is very informative (sorry, can't think of the title at the moment).

The Labor Support Handbook by Penny Simpkin and the Nurturing Touch at Birth by Polly Perez are both very helpful. For breastfeeding, I agree with the recommendation for Jack Newman's book and also his website. Google Stanford University, breastfeeding and find good videos on hand expressing breast milk and getting the baby latched on. If you're in L&D, just put the baby skin to skin immediately, and you won't have to do much else.

The Birth Partner. Depending on what kind of labor support you are speaking of and if you can afford it consider taking a doula training class/ workshop. You dont have to pursue certification, just take the workshop
