Any future nurse midwives here?

Hi, I was just wondering how many of you nurses that work in OB plan on becoming nurse midwives. I have always seen it as an untimate goal of mine and was wondering if anyone else shared the dream.

Teresa

I am hoping to become a midwife eventually. Not for another few years though....

Specializes in L&D, Ambulatory Care.

However, I am graduating with my BSN on Sunday, and will start as an L&D nurse end of July.

I want to work for several years first.

My main goal has always been to go on to earn my masters degree and become a midwife. I work with several midwives now who are wonderful and they have only encouraged me to reach my goal. However, i do see how busy they are and anyone who thinks that being a midwife is easier and less time consuming then being an MD is wrong. Our midwives take just as much call and spend even more time with their patients.

This is why I have choosen to wait on my dream and have my family first. I think you really need to be there for your family and dont think it would be fair to try and do both at the same time. Right now we plan on starting our family and after they are in school i will go back to school myself. Untill then, I LOVE what I do and wouldnt trade my job for the world.

P.S. Good Luck Melissa! I was in your shoes 3 yrs ago. It is great starting out as a new nurse. Which hospital will you be working in?

I will be working at Yale-New Haven Hospital

great place! Congrats!

yes i am currently looking into midwife programs

When I first started in OB I didn't want to be a midwife. Now the more I see our Midwives in action at work. The more I want to do what they do. I agree with CTRN1 though. I am going to wait till I have my family to go back to school. I want to be able to spend time with them as they grow up.
