Hi,

I am wondering if there are any current UNLV BSN students that could give me some insight into the program?

I am currently completing my pre-reqs here in Southern California and at the end of the Fall semester, I will have all my prereqs complete (and I just started Fall 2009). I wouldn't really be ready to attend until Summer 2011 at the earliest, as I am currently pursing an AA Spanish and an AS in Health Sciences before nursing school.

I spoke with one of the Nursing advisors just to see if their office had summer hours, as I will be touring the campus at large next week while visiting Vegas. I knew I couldnt just bust in with my informal transcript and get a provisional acceptance - hahahha, would be great if I did.:clown: lol He was very nice and helpful, which encouraged me more.

Also, current students, please tell me a little about life off-campus, so I can kind of get a feel for what it's really like there.

Hello. I transferred from a community college from southern california and i am pursuing UNLV bsn degree. UNLV is a great campus and the teachers and nursing advisement are very helpful. Although I have heard a lot of different things from different students, it should not be too difficult to get in and there is no waiting list seeing as they accept about 40 students every semester (fall, spring, summer) . be aware though, you do have to complete some courses that they did not offer at community colleges in southern california. You need to take a NURS 299 class, World Lit, and the nevada constitution class...also an organic chemistry class. If you apply without taking those classes, students who have taken those classes or most of them do get priority into the program. Hope this kinda helped. :)

I'm a UNLV student and I start the program in January, so I can't tell you much about the program itself, but I know quite a bit about the application and acceptance process.

If you haven't checked out the UNLV Nursing website I suggest you do as there is a lot of useful information about pre-requisites:

As for transferring courses I suggest you check out the course equivalence tables:

As the above poster mentioned there are some courses you will have to take in Nevada. The only course that has to be taken at UNLV is Nurs 299. PSC 101 must be taken in Nevada to fulfill the constitution requirement, but can be taken at College of Southern Nevada, you can even take it online, probably could take it while still in California.

Admissions is very competitive, there are usually about 100 applicants a semester, of those only 45 are granted admission. I don't know if you have taken the HESI yet but I suggest spending a few weeks studying for it as it is a very big part of the admission points system used for entrance.

Although UNLV is a university and has dormitories the vast majority of students are commuters. This gives it a different feel than a traditional university such as UNR, where I also studied. That said, my professors have been excellent at UNLV and very interested in their subjects. The students are generally more interested in school than "extracurricular" activities, as they generally somewhat older and have jobs.

Hi all - I guess I didnt post it here or update... NO longer interested in UNLV. NO diversity (all filapinas); additionally the staff was kind of rude - I ended up going to the campus/office in person the next week; so i got all the information that I needed. Additionally they told me how they manage to exclude people for a minimum of 10 years if they dont meet their requirements (who is stupid enough to wait ten years when we have over 20 nursing schools within the range of 6 miles?). At first that didnt deter me.

What did deter me was a school in a state notorious for gambling and prostitution expecting me to go above and beyond the requirements for CSU (which has a higher set of requirements than UCLA) of which I have exceeded. That was a little ridiculous for even me.

I plan to go somewhere around here and bridge or whatever.

what do u mean they wanted you to wait a min of 10 years of not meeting requirements? what are the requirements?

Check their website or call them directly. You have "2 bites at the apple" in terms of the prereqs (micro, anatomy, etc.). If your grade is below a B (that counts as one time), if you take it over and still dont get a B - you are prohibited from reapplying to the nursing program for a minimum of 10 years.

They also came to my community college Fall 2010 and they reiterated their "policy"/

Call them if you do not believe me... I am going to one of the 25 colleges/universities that we have here in Los Angeles...

I'm not sure what I'm offended by more, the borderline racist comment about the student body, or the insinuation that all Nevadans are gamblers and prostitutes. :rolleyes:

For the record the UNLV nursing program is extremely diverse, in fact I can't think of a single age group, race, religion or ethnicity not represented in the 48 students that make up my class.

Actually, what I've noticed is -- most of UNLV nursing students are white and females. That goes true for NSC also. I guess it depends for each graduating class.

California schools are changing their policies slowly nowadays, that's for sure. Only a few schools are sticking to their "killer requirements".

It's interesting what happens in 2012 for California higher ed. (when there will BE A LOT MORE people who can no longer afford to go to college). Higher ed. will have no choice but to raise their tuition and no one can blame them for that either.

Jacob, its alright - you're right a picture of the previous year's graduation class (being monoethnic) is no representation of every class admitted. As I stated before, I live in the land of multiple nursing schools; I'll be fine! My comment was not racist, babe - all one ethnic group (in a picture I saw in June 2010) doesn't represent "diversity" no matter how you spin it... Racism implies that I have some kind of power to oppress - yes my statements on a forum are probably hurting people that graduated already and have jobs... Make sure a concept is something you've personally experienced before you shake a finger at someone who has. Hahahahhaahha. As we say in Connecticut - get outta here...
