Online interview a pediatric nurse

Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

Hi. I need to interview a pediatric nurse, because that is the area I would like to go into. Yes, I can do it electronically. If you would be interested I would love to interview you via email. The questions are about your career and how you got there. My assignment is due Wed 30th of May. I graduate in August. I work in a nursing home, and there are obviously no pediatric nurses there, and I don't know how to go about calling a hospital to ask someone if they have a minute to talk.If you could please email me at [email protected] thank you!

*Please only reply if you can help. Don't tell me to get out of my "comfort zone."

A gentle reminder that this is a public board and there are many who post here. We encourage students to become the best nurse that they can be. You can call the local elementary school or call a pediatricians office to speak to a peds nurse. Is important that you learn how to cold interview strangers face to face since that is a majority of the nursing process. As a nurse you will have to interview patients as a part on the nursing admission process.

There is a ton of non verbal cues that are very valuable in the assessment of your patient that will be vital in developing your plan for their care. Especially children and children of abuse...your non verbal ques from body language and interaction between the parent/caregiver will give you more information than a typed/written response can ever obtain.

Tell us about what makes you want to be a peds nurse. I am sure you will get other peds nurses that will respond. There are many threads here on AN that talk about peds nursing. Here is a good one about starting IV's on babies. https://allnurses.com/pediatric-nursing/ivs-baby-am-701804.html

And another about PICU (pediactric ICU nurses) from frequent contributor to AN

we get these requests a lot (i seem to be repeating myself a lot lately), so if there are any other students out there who might get this kind of assignment, listen up:

part of your faculty's reason for giving you this assignment is to get you to go out there and speak to an rn face to face. a big email blast is not a substitute for shoe leather. an is not google.

see, in nursing, you have to learn to speak to a lot of people you would not otherwise encounter; you might find yourself out of your comfort zone. this is part of nursing, a huge part. an anonymous respondent online, well, you don't really know who we are, do you? we could be the truck driving guy living next door for all you know.

so if all you do about learning new things is "go to the keyboard and hit send," then you are limiting your chances of actual learning a valuable skill you will need all your working life.

that said: where will you find a nurse? think outside the (computer) box.

local hospital: go to the staff development/inservice education office and ask one of them. they value education and will be happy to chat or to hook you up with someone who is.

go to the public health department downtown. ditto.

go to the local school and ask to speak to a school nurse. ditto.

go to a local clinic / physician/np office. ditto.

go to the local jail and ask to speak to the nurse there. ditto.

notice all of these say, "go to..." and not "email..." remember that part about meeting new people face to face and comfort zone.

go!
