I have the answer key to this, and I'm doing fine with everything else but the two piggy back questions have me stumped. I have a test Monday for this and this is the only section I feel unsure about. Can anyone explain to me how to set up the proportion for this?

15. Order: 2 g Keflin IV piggyback in 100 ml D5W over 30 mins.

Welcome to AN; before we jump in to help you at least tell us how you approached the problem

I had been setting up my proportions by:

mg mg

__=__

X ml/hr

but that obviously doesn't work with this problem. I have searched google for help so even a link that is a tutorial would be wonderful. I'm feel super discouraged. It's been almost a year since I've taken medical math so I am a little rusty :-(. Most of it came back but I'm drawing a blank with this :-(.

The answer on the key is 66.7 mg/min but I have tried several different ways and I haven't gotten anywhere close.

ok it is not a rocket science..

if the question asks you how many mg/min, then (2g to mg is 2000mg)

so, 2000mg/30min= 66.67

However if the question asks how many ml/min, then it is (100ml/30)=3.3ml/min

The piggy back threw me off and the set up is different than the other questions in this area. Thank you so much, I was getting so frustrated and it just wasn't clicking tonight. They have a few other piggy back practice problems I can try in my study packet, I'm going to attempt the, now, thank you so much again.

The question that you posted doesn't say what they are looking for. If the question is how many mg/min and you are giving 2,000 mg over 30 min, it's simple division to get to that answer.
