 I'm doing my careplan for a pt who's post-op for a laparoscopic low anterior resection and im having trouble finding information in my med/surg book. I'm looking for specifics on what this surgery is and then pre-op and post-op nursing dx and interventions for this kind of surgery. I googled this up with mostly journals. Does anyone know of any good textbooks and websites I can go to find this info?? :lol2: :monkeydance:

I'm not a surgical nurse, but your pt. had a laparascopic resection of what, exactly?

Careplans in school are not about finding the textbook page/online resource for XYZ procedure and filling in the blanks ... but instead a process to get you to think through the care your patient is going to need.

Risks/complications/issues related to all surgical procedures: hypotension & other effects of anesthesia ... pain control ... infection ... bowel & bladder issues ... early ambulation ... use of incentive spirometry ... management of co-morbidities ...

Hope these get you thinking. :)

oh it was a resection of her sigmoid colon..she has diverticulitis

Thanks so much for all your responses!! Till next time!!

Mosby's "care of the patient in surgery" is one of the best surgical books written. If you are really interested in surgery go to half.com (retail is grossly overpriced)and get a good used copy of the newest edition (with the red cover). They have almost every procedure with pre and post op info...great resource!

I learned that while doing my careplans with my clients that it is important to prioritize. The careplans have to be individualized according to each client and his/her needs. Every careplan is not alike. However, there are books that are excellent guides for writing care plans. Gulanick's Nursing Care Plan and Swearingen's All in one care planning resource. I hope that this helps.

for us, it is absolutely about finding it in the book and what page number. Every intervention we use must have a rationale out of a book, referenced APA style. it is completely frustrating; some of the perfectly good interventions i performed for the patient can't be included in my care plan, because i can't properly reference it. it makes for a loong weekend writing a paper.

Specializes in Hospice, LTC, Med/Surg.

Please post an example of an intervention that you used and why, then I'll tell you how to find the reference material for it.
