Job Shadowing

Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

Hey all,

So I'm kind of in a dilemma. I am desperately trying to job shadow RNs/Nurse Practitioners but all of the hospitals around me only let you do that if you know a professional who works at their hospital, and I know zero people who are nurses or doctor, or just plainly work in a hospital, so finding someone to sponsor me for a day and let me job shadow them is very difficult. How do I go about networking with RNs/NPs in hopes to find someone who's willing to include me in their busy day and practice?

Have you looked into professional nursing organizations? They have meetings where you would have opportunity to network.

Will I be able to join them even though I'm a pre-nursing student? We don't have many professional organizations or similar opportunities around where I live, but I will definitely try to look around and see where I can get in. Thank you!

There are some organizations that have a student option. For my specialty (operating room), AORN charges dues of $160/year for licensed nurses and $20 for students pursuing education leading to nursing licensure. Check with your state nursing association, organizations for specialties you're interested in, and whatever else you might think of.

Look for your district ANA (American Nurses Association). My local one allows anyone to attend the meetings even if they aren't a member. They invited our classes several times and it allowed for networking.
