Concept of the body

Hi guys,

I'm in a little pickle, I have a group assessment that requires me to talk for 5 minutes about the concept of the body and the effect of the care with patients.

I have been researching like crazy for a few days, trying desperately to find anything useful on this subject and have come up with absolutely nothing.

I think my main issue is, I don't understand what they mean by concepts of body.

The rest of my group believes it may be related to the sexualization of nurse's. is anyone able to give me a hand?

I really hope this makes sense.

Perhaps how that patient perceives their body and what their culture tells them about their body? Not sure by your question.

Not sure by your question.

Sorry, "What is concept of body" is really my question. I do know that is it related to the nurses' body & not so much on the patient's.

Why would the nurse's concept of her own body and sexualization have anything to do with patient care? Is it because somebody thinks that one's personal feelings and beliefs are projected onto the patient? Are we talking about being aware of one's own feelings and beliefs about sex so we can avoid doing that? Are we thinking about being sensitive to patients' modesty or beliefs about how their illness will affect their sexual lives? Or how the nurse thinks about bodies as physiological wholes? While possible, I think this very unlikely and I think your group's mind is off-track.

I agree with BecomingNursey that your assignment is more likely to be pointing you at discerning your patients' body image and beliefs so you can then deliver more culturally competent care... but at this point I would very strongly recommend that you put down your pencil and ask this question of your faculty, because you seem muddled about how to proceed. It's your faculty who need to set you on the path they determine, do get that clarified immediately before you waste any more time.
