it is a very prevalent and widespread used topical antiseptic more commonly known by its brand name of betadine. if you have a pharmacology textbook it will be found in the chapter about antiseptics and disinfectants. this is some of the information in the book i have:

(page 559,
pharmacology: an introduction
, 5th edition, by henry hitner and barbara nagle)

". . .antiseptics and disinfectants are useful for reducing microbial growth and contamination, and thus for reducing the risk of infection (especially wound infection) from exogenous sources. this aspect is particularly important during surgical procedures, in which local infection could significantly delay wound (incision) healing. . .antiseptics are used to cleanse and irrigate wounds, cuts, and abrasions, to prepare (degerm) patients' skin prior to surgery or injection, and to prepare the surgical team prior to surgery. an ideal antiseptic kills bacteria with a persistent duration of action and does not irritate or sensitize the skin. . .the objectives of antiseptic treatment are to decrease the opportunity for bacteria to enter the body and to permit normal defense mechanisms to continue uninterrupted in the healing process.

iodine is probably superior to all other antiseptics for degerming the skin. iodine is a rapid-acting, potent germicide effective against bacteria, protozoa, and viruses. . .iodine complexes (iodophors) cause less irritation and staining and although they are only bacteriostatic, they are used frequently as surgical preps. in general, preparations containing iodine are for topical use and are not to be taken orally."

i am looking at a bottle of betadine that i was sent home from the hospital with to do my dressing changes with. the label states:

"for preparation of skin and mucous membranes prior to surgery. helps reduce bacteria that may cause skin infection.
