Anesthesia informative speech

Nursing Students Student Assist

Published

Hello all! I am a pre-nursing student (last semester, hopefully) and I am drafting an informative speech for my public speaking class. I am going to talk about general anesthesia, and the physiological aspects a patient would experience during each phase (i.e. induction, maintenance, and emergence phase). I have a pretty neat back story on why I chose this topic and I'm going to begin telling a story about how my dad woke up in the middle of eye surgery a few years ago (I know it's crazy, but it's attention-grabbing for sure!!!) My first main point is going to introduce my topic on a consumer level to give a brief overview about what it is and the types of anesthesia (local, regional, and general). I'm stuck on where to go next with my speech.... any ideas on what I can talk about next, without getting off topic and talking about too many ideas on anesthesia?? I appreciate any thoughts and input :cat:

Hi good luck on your speech! I think if i had to have 3 topics I would choose the following:

1. An introduction to what anesthesia is.

2. Physiologic changes of the body while under general anesthesia and drugs used. example: hypotension, CNS depression, GCS, respiratory depression, Drugs: Etomidate, propofol, neosynephrine and look up some more

[/font]3. How someone might wake up while in the middle of a procedure.

How long does the speech have to be? You could probably focus the entire thing on awareness while under anesthesia. Give you personal example, talk about the prevalence, how it happens, and what can be done to prevent it, as well as what should be done after it has occurred.
