Uniforms for "Chill Babies"?

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

I am getting ready to start Nursing School and wondering about under shirts vs. scrub jackets. Which do folks prefer? I was told that some rooms are fairly hot and some are chilly and there is no happy medium most times.

Your options will depend on your school's dress code for clinicals -- have you checked the dress code?

Dress code only states color for uniform. They provide 2 sets of navy scrubs (tops with logo; must be worn for clinicals) and the option to wear coordinating print tops during class, but nothing about jacket or undershirts. I have seen both at school so I don't think it is a problem to wear either. I just wondered which people prefer and why.

I would say go with the jacket. I like the look of a white long sleeved top under scrubs, but in reality it can be an infection hazard if the sleeves were to drape, say, into an open wound during a dressing change or if you are inserting a foley and have to use part of your arm to hold back the skin from the thigh (gross but true). The jacket is easily removed in situations like this, or if you get hot. Also, if you have a patient on precautions that you have to gown before entering the room, you will sweat in those gowns, so you would definitely not want long sleeves on under the gown!
