Is this uniform appropriate?

Nurses Uniform/Gear

Published

As a guy, i'm not a fan of scrub tops and fortunately my place of work allows us to wear polo style shirts instead. I intend to wear a shirt tucked in with some black or khaki colored emt/tactical pants. I prefer those pants to typical scrub bottoms in part because of the fit, but also because I "feel" more professional when my shirt is tucked in and i'm wearing a belt.

I've read threads where some people have worn the emt/tactical pants instead of typical scrub bottoms which gave me the impression that the two were interchangeable. So I guess my question is:

In your experience, do you consider emt/tactical pants to be worn as scrub bottoms "appropriate"? (Also, I will be working in a psych environment)

I'm basically wanting my uniform to look like khaki's and a polo as much as possible while still looking like a medical professional.

Thank you all in advance for your time and responses. This may be an odd post, but i'm excited for this new job and I want to look and feel my best.

(I probably should have put this in the uniform section, but I was hoping to start off here for some more views.)

your employer probably has a dress code. If allowed, wear what is comfortable to you. Will the tactical pants seem like an aggressive uniform to the patients? As for EMS personnel, you will have a badge or other ID so that should take care of the similarity. Good luck in your new position!

Nurses always have had to wear certain colors around here, even the psych nurses wear the colors. The mental health techs wear black and the social workers wear business casual.

I wouldn t wear tactical pants. It looks too military or police officer like. Too many people mistook us as police officers back when I worked the road. Plus they can get hot. I'm waiting for my aviators to come in, but I'd rather wear scrubs than ems pants any day. Well, m ER has battles with thermostats.

...tactical pants... looks too military or police officer like...

Agree.

Usually in psych, you wear street clothes or scribe, depending on the facility. Mine allows both. Most nurses who have been there a long time.wear street clothes. I think you're fine.

The facilities around here require the psych nurses to wear the scrub colors all nurses wear and the mental health techs wear either teal if they are at one health care system and black if they are employed by my employer. I don't know what the pediatric unit does at the other hospital who is not affiliated with the two main systems.
