Nursing Student to send resume for CNA - do I include my skills?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hi, I am going into my second year of my ADN program and hope to get an RN position at my local hospital so I want to now get a position as a CNA there. It makes sense that I highlight that I am a nursing student who has done my clinical rotations at this hospital.

However, I am wondering if it would be a good thing or a not-so-good thing to list my student RN skills like IV starts, medication administration, NG tube insertions, Foleys, etc..

I know as a CNA that I won't be applying these skills and I don't want to make it appear as if I might inadvertently have some role confusion if I am hired and overstep my scope.

What do you think?

Thanks so much!

Glad you want to work as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) while being a student. This will get your “foot in the door” and you will gain valuable experience. Be sure to make a good impression and get to know your coworkers and managers.

According to http://www.nsna.org/portals/0/skins/nsna/pdf/realitiesofthecurrentjobmarket.pdf, "Remember that if you are licensed as an RN and working in a different role, you will be held to the higher standard (that of an RN)—so you must be careful to practice in the role and job description that you are hired for." So I guess list the CNA skillsets that you know you can do and emphasize in the interview that's the job you'll hired to do while going to school. It shows the employer you know your duties and won't stir up a hornet's nest with the RNs by "showing off" your RN knowledge.

Once in, take advantage to observe how the RN's go about their job and translate that obervation into your lessons.
