South University

Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

I spoke today with an admissions advisor for South University about the online RN-BSN. It does sound tempting and promising. Some highlight from the conversation that I thought I would pass on:

1) Degree does not say anything about online or distance education. Simply is from South University, Savannah Georgia campus.

2) They will take up to 139 credit hours

3) They award 45 hours for your RN license

4) They are in 5 1/2 week sessions. You can take 1 or 2 classes at a time.

5) If you are transferring in all the gen ed classes, you are done in 3 quarters which is 1 year

6) No "clinical" times. No making arrangements with a BSN or MSN trained nurse to watch you do assessments, and no community health clinical.

7) Technically not a "test based" program, although some instructors use them to measure how you are advancing. So if there are no tests, I am assuming it is all power points and paper writing.

8) You do not meet online at a certain time to chat with your classmates. Discussion boards are used, and you have to log on and participate atleast 4 out of 7 days a week

9) They are accredited, and accept financial aid, etc.

10) Nursing program is $280/hr. There are no additional costs for out of state resident. Everyone pays the same fees.

The guy that I spoke to was extremely pleasant and informative. Has anyone dealt with South yet and have anything (good or bad) to say about them?

I have spoken with South and have been extremly pleased. I spoke with Sara, an admission counselor. As a matter of fact I enrolled because of how helpful they were. I was enrolled in University of Dundee and withdrew because of inconsistencies in their grading. they are holding on to my financial aide and are not being very cooperative. South is helping me with my fight to get my money. Since Dundee is foreign, they don't have to go by the same rules as we do here in the states. I have missed the first class at South because Dundee won't release my funds. they keep telling me "they are working on it." I like all the things that you listed about South. I dont'have a problem writing papers and doing power points-I teach in a Vocational Nurisng program and use power points in my lectures every day.

any way- I was really impressed with South-when I first spoke to the admission counselor and tolr her about all the schools I was looking into-she helped me research them all and did NOT pressure me in any way to enroll. She just told me here is all the info-you need to make up your mind what will be the best fit for you. I really appreciated that.

What type of MSN is this? A family nurse practitioner? Or something else? I can't find that information on the site. Thanks, Dee

i am doing the RN-BSN, so am not sure about the MSN. i know they offer one, and think it is in education, but am not sure about that. the best thing to do is e-mail them or call them. like we said, the admission people are very helpful.
