NC and Excelsior - Any known probs?

Nursing Students Online Learning

Just found out we're moving to North Carolina. Does anyone know of any issues with Excelsior grads sitting for the NC Boards? I haven't been able to find anything about Excelsior (good or bad) on the North Carolina State Board of Nursing website.

Thanks in advance!

One of the students at my CPNE was from NC and had no issues whatsoever getting an NC RN license as an EC grad.

But...that was in 2003 and board rulings can change over time.

Call them to make sure. If they say yes and that there are no problems, be very clear in asking if there are any stipulations attached to EC such as having to be an LPN beforehand, etc. as some states do this.

FYI, Colorado has never had problems with licensing EC grads either, but they suddenly made a ruling to restrict their grads for licensure and it is nowhere to be found on their website. It takes effect in a little over a month and they still have no announcements whatsoever on their board website.

I only found out be e-mailing them and asking. So please contact the NC board directly just in case.

Actually Colorado has been throwing this idea around for the past year or so, I graduated EC in March of this year and knew from EC state boards office that a change could occur at any given time. They have been considering this decision since early 2004. If you also read back over the past year in their board meetings they brought this issue up...several months ago. The info is indeed on their board web page (but not in an area that one would think to look). I found this about 3 weeks ago when checking their web site. Go to the colorado board web site click on the bar titled statutes, rules, and policies located on the left hand side of the web page. Next scroll down about half way and click on index of all board rules. Under chapter one click on adopted rules for January 1, 2006...you will find it there.

Thanks. I've read exhaustively through their board minutes and yes, they've been throwing it around with no real decision made forever.

I'll take a look again because I'm curious as to when this decision was actually made.

Thanks again for the directions on where to find it, but I still stand firmly that something this important needs to be an alert in the announcements on the homepage, not buried in piles of policies.

It's a brand new change in policy for crying out loud.

Even the education person at the CO BNE agreed with me that it's a big change and told me she'd be looking into the web page having more clear, easy to find information on this issue because it's that important.

I have several friends in NC who went LPN to RN through Excelsior (one just last year) and had no problems whatsoever. I am licensed in both States (VA and NC) and graduated from Excelsior.

You'll be fine. :)

I agree. At least California posted the announcement on the front page of their website when the policy changed. You gotta wonder why Colorado isn't doing the same.

Yes and I specifically pointed out CA's homepage alert as an example to the woman at the CO BNE that I've been e-mailing.

She said she'll look into getting an alert on the homepage right away and acted surprised that one wasn't already there.

You wouldn't believe the most frivilous things that are listed on their "news and hot topics" section with no mention of the recent EC ruling.
