Has anybody taken this class? As far as I can see, there is a discussion board + essays. Do I have to set up a proctored exam or the class is completely online?

Another question is - are there any cheaper alternatives? :)

For cheaper alternatives, I would look at the online offerings of your local schools or do an internet search.

Of course I've done that :)

I guess my question wasn't really clear. I want to know about personal experience - if anybody has taken a class that they enjoyed and that was cheaper than EC class.

For example, I took Information literacy at my local community college. After two month (just before the end of the class) I realized that I could do it through Penn Foster and save myself money and time.

Thanks!

you might check penn foster for that one, too...with prices like theirs, it might not be a bad deal. i've taken online classes with st leo university, troy state university, state fair community college, all of which were good classes, nothing spectacular, but you might check and see what the policy is for taking one or two classes through them....just a thought.

I took Writing for the Professions last year. It was a good class and I learned alot! It helped me prepare for the Research in Nursing class. My papers are so much easier to write after taking that class! It involved discussions and a few papers. No proctored exams, I did take a timed quiz though. Good luck!

I'm taking this class through EC right now. I didn't look for an alternative because I didn't have time... had to use my grant money before the end of the fiscal year and I was already enrolled at Excelsior. But anyway, so far I really like the course. Every 2 weeks you start a new module. For each module there is 3 discussion board questions. You have to write your response (about a paragraph) and then respond to at least one of your classmate's post. That part is pretty simple. And you have some readings assigned but it is very simple reading and doesnt take very long. You do have to write 2 papers... however, your discussion board activities and readings lead you up to writing the paper, so by the time you start to write it, you've already done a lot of the work. There is also a couple other small assignments. No exam. Yes it is completely online. You might be able to find a cheaper alternative. Since it meets the requirement for advanced expository writing... I would just search for "advanced expository writing" online and see what you can find. And then check with excelsior and make sure that course is approved.
