Ohio with restrictions

Nurses Criminal

Published

Hi! I am a new nurse. I graduated in Ohio last spring with my ADN. I originally took my NCLEX for AZ. I decided to stay and applied for my RN license in Ohio by endorsement. I have a misdemeanor criminal hx from my past. I knew my past could prevent me from nursing, but read every case is different so I went for it anyways because I didn't want any regrets. Because nursing is what I want to do. I submitted everything in my application in early September 2015. I was notifed that the Board wanted me to complete an evaluation in October 2015. I scheduled the appointment, the earliest was December 2015 in Akron. The evaluation was primarily for alcohol because my past criminal hx involved alcohol. The Doctor who evaluated me told me not to be surprised if the Board wanted me to jump through a couple of more hoops. After about 3-4 weeks my information was finally forwarded to the Board. The Board decided to offer me a Consent Agreement. The agreement was written and voted on at the end of January 2016. I agreed to terms of the agreemen . The time starts from the time you are working in a nursing position. I had an interview back in October and was offered a RN position. Prior to starting I had to send my Manager a copy of the agreement. (Thankfully the job offer was still offered to me months later). Basically I check into FirstLab everyday and if I'm randomly picked I go in for testing. I have to attend AA meetings, have my manager send quarterly reports, inform the Board of all my medications and Doctors, and any new Physicians or Doctors I will have. I have no medication restrictions, but I cannot work in management or use my license for any volunteer positions unless the Board agrees prior. Also there was a CE Requirement. The agreement can be as long as 3 years, but if I comply with the agreement I can apply to have my case reviewed earlier than 3 years. I'm so thankful that I was granted a license and that I have a job! Its tough but I have to do this or not work as a nurse. I just want to know if anyone had a similar experience past or present.
