Issues with applying to nursing school because of legal trouble

Nurses Criminal

Hey everyone! I'm new to the site and had a few questions for you guys. So, I just recently finished up my prerequisites and am searching for nursing schools to apply to to get my ADN or BSN. Basically.. about 4 years ago when I was in high school I received an MIP for alcohol, and a few weeks later an open container ticket. Let me just inform you all that I was not in a car, there was a bottle in my friends car that we hadn't been drinking and we were outside the locked car and we both received tickets. Anyway, I was young and foolish and there were consequences. I took the necessary classes and am in the process of getting them both expunged. My question for you is, will schools be able to see that these charges were on my record and were expunged? I was told that they would be gone as if they never happened but have also heard that these schools would still be able to bring up the expunged charges. I'm very worried about getting into a nursing program with these issues and any information/advice you have would be great. Thanks!

You need to anonymously ask the BON about this and be prepared to retain legal counsel. Even if you're accepted to nursing school, the BON may not issue you a license depending on the charges. They absolutely have the right to deny you licensure, even after you spend all that time and money getting your BSN.

Schools should not be able to see expunged charges. Consult with an attorney for the most accurate answer.

However, most if not all BONs require you to disclose expunged charges.
