hello all,

I was convicted of a M4 domestic violence in ohio 13 years ago. I understand the laws have changed since them, disqualifying that charge for expungement, despite that I am filing for expungement any way!!! I recently have enrolled in the medical assisting program until I am able to pass the TEAS test and get into the nursing program. Does anyone out there know anything about the policies, rules or anything of the sort in ohio??? I feel like I am wasting my time and money and efforts for even trying if I will never be able to become a RN here.

any feedback, or input is greatly appreciated!!!

thanks all

To be honest, the best source for the answer of whether Ohio will license you is the Ohio BON.

But here's the problem: almost all BONs will not give you an answer about licensure if you just call and ask, but will tell you they will give a definite answer AFTER you have applied and submitted all necessary documents. This is because BONs usually review criminal applicants on a case-by-case basis. You could definitely try contacting the Ohio BON (call or do it anonymously by e-mail if you prefer) but don't expect to get a definite Yay or Nay. But maybe they can give you enough information to help you decide if pursuing nursing will be worth it.

I say "will it be worth it," because you have a decision to make. The fact it that just because a school accepts your criminal record doesn't mean the BON has to accept it too and license you. Some criminal record applicants have slogged through nursing school just to have the door slammed in their face by a BON who refused to grant them a license. So even if you were to find a school that would admit you with your record, it's no guarantee of licensure.

Fair? Not always. But that's how things are. Nursing school is a risk that you'd have to decide whether it's worth taking.

Last, should you ever be able to get your record expunged, keep in mind that you will still have to declare expunged convictions to most if not all BONs. Expungement won't let you sneak something past them.

Best of luck.

Felony or misdemeanor? Some states won't allow you to hold a state professional license with a felony conviction.
