do expunged charges matter

I graduate in a year ava during the break I was pulled over with less than a gram of marijuana. I don't normally ever use this because of school, and would give anything to take it back. I believe it will be be expunged within six months. I also have two expunged shoplifting charges from 4 and 5 years ago. Since the bon can see everything, does it even matter these things are expunged? I'm so discouraged and feel like there's no point in finishing, if I'm only going to be denied. I've contacted the sc bonw and they won't tell me anything.

The BON cannot tell you anything because you have not graduated and applied to take the NCLEX. Has your case been to court? Are you on probation? The first step to take will be to notify your school. If you are allowed to continue with classes and clinicals, make certain you understand that your application for licensure may be reviewed. If you were a juvenile with the shoplifting charges, that may make a difference.

Not trying to be discouraging, just realistic.

If it is truly expunged then it can't be seen.

Unfortunately, not true for an FBI criminal background check which most If not all BONs require.

I have seen many expunged cases show up on FBI background checks. The severity and length of time since the offense is key to board or job application action.

Specializes in Emergency Department.

The issue is whether or not the charges resulted in convictions. If not, the Board may want there to be a disposition for any charges that are still technically "open" and do not actually have a "dismissed", "guilty", "NC", "not guilty", or "factually innocent" result. Certain agencies can see everything you've ever been charged with... even if expunged.

The school did a background check the last charge may be dropped, but I am guaranteed expungement if is not.

And no probation. I'm just wondering if expunged cases even look better to the bon.

Yes, but if memory serves the process is a bit slow. Like everything else in life, nothing is guaranteed. Best wishes and hope for the best!
