BSN. Haven't taken NCLEX but just got arrested for Petty Theft! Help!!!

Nurses Criminal

Published

Hey everyone, I really need some help! I am freaking out. I am 30 years old and for some reason, decided to steal items from Walmart for my family as we are having financial difficulties and I got caught. I have my BSN but haven't taken the NCLEX yet. I am going to get a lawyer and do whatever I can do to get this charge reduced or dismissed.

Does anyone have any experience with this? How difficult is it finding a job? Is my career over?! How can I shield this from BON and HR of a hospital? I desperately want to be a nurse and I'm so ashamed at what I did.

Hmm... I wouldn't guess that there is going to be a way to sneak this by the BON, considering that (at least under my impression, anyway) the things they *specifically* look for are shoplifting/theft and abuse/neglect. How are you supposed to be trusted now around supplies, dietary items, and narcotics?

Also, how could you explain why your BSN wasn't worth seeking out the multiple avenues for community resources to help families in financial hardships? You're obviously intelligent enough to earn that degree (which includes a little bit of community health education, yes?). I don't see how any of your professional authorities are going to be sympathetic to your story.

I have a record. I got stung with a MIP, several "disorderly house" tickets, and driving with a suspended license. But this was all nearly ten years ago. If you can get by the board, you may be able to find a job that does not include bedside nursing until enough time has lapsed to show that you have established a clean record. But you're going to have to be more than "desperate" to being a nurse. You're going to have to be COMMITTED to everything that comes along with the role.

Usually, that means keeping your nose clean ;)

Good luck to you. Truly.

You are right to be freaked out - you have worked hard to get this far and now a stupid decision may cost you a nursing career. Firstly you will need a conviction before you HAVE to inform the BON. Your best bet would be to try to plead this out so it does not reach the conviction level. It may be too late and I know a lot of places ALWAYS prosecute shoplifters as part of their store policy and I would bet Walmart is one of those places. Are you scheduled to take the NCLEX? You way be able to get it done before you reach the level of conviction but the BON can still deny licensure even if you pass. I hope you have an experienced lawyer that can provide you with legal advice to cover your complex situation. I wish you the best of luck.
