Experienced psych RN in NYC, from canada

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello All,

I just moved to NYC from Canada and I am looking for psych RN jobs. I have 2 years outpatient experience in psych, 2 years on a medical unit.

How difficult is it going to be to find a job? I've been throwing out online applications for 2 months with no response, and so I am concerned. I know it takes long to get a job, but I figured I would get at least a call from a recruiter.

I appreciate advice on the matter! I'm starting a psych NP degree at Hunter and really need to work at the same time!

Specializes in Med/Surg.

I too have been been trying to secure a psych nursing job here in NYC. I have a Med-Surg job and have always worked Med-Surg full time but I really miss my per diem psych gig I had a few years ago and would like another one or even a switch to psych full-time. The reason I no longer have that job is because the facility closed.

These closures of mental health facilities are rampant..inpatient, outpatient, detox and recovery, group homes, state/city funded, developmental disabilities..you name it, they are all dropping like flies. This of course in addition to abandoning vulnerable patients reduces job availabilities and floods the market with unemployed psych specialists. I am not saying it is impossible to land a psych job..I do see openings. But I don't really get call backs.

If you have a car check out NYP Westchester they have a lovely and renowned psych facility in White Plains. Unfortunately I don't have a drivers license and it's not accessible by transit. I hope that you have better luck than me. Best wishes to you.
