land, I work in a rural critical access hospital and fell into this job. I was in systems for years as a COBOL programmer and went back to nursing school after my job was outsourced in 2002.
If you don't have ties (because you'd probably have to travel) you might look into getting in with Meditech, Epic, Cerner/McKesson, or HMS in any way they would take you. I can almost guarantee, though, that you'll take a pay cut. Contracted dialysis work pays very well, from my limited understanding.
I've never heard if an informatics internship, but then, I'm not in a position to hear of much.
