What are your plans as a RN?

I don't know if it's only me seeing/reading these posts here like "I don't know what to do", "I can't find a job", "looking for work several years with no experience", etc. It is sad to say that dreams of going abroad to the US will be halted for several years. I am not even sure if the 5 years would be enough. It could be even more. As I have been observed here and from my colleagues, taking the NCLEX, CFGNS, IELTS, has been like a mandatory for them to take not knowing the real scenario ahead.

I have been doing some thinking lately that there should be something done or information being spread to BSN graduates. I think with the cooperation of everybody especially Filipino RNs in the US can contribute. If it takes a sticky with bold capital letters saying retrogression is on going. I think it can be done for starters. It is really unfortunate to hear such remarks from fellow colleagues who are losing hope and distracted in their nursing career. Appropriate Nursing diagnosis would be Knowledge Deficient. Anybody feels the same way? Do you have any more ideas?

For those nursing students, newly BSN graduates, RNs with or without experience, please let us know your short term or long term concrete plans. Any plans you have in mind, post it here. I know a lot of people here are willing to give information or guide you in achieving those plans.

I am really impressed with the people here posting their plans amidst other RNs who are in dilemma on what to do with their nursing career. I strongly believe that if your heart is set on nursing, you will take that path though sometimes it can be delayed due to other concerns. Just set your plans through that path if you really have passion for this job.

If you were brought up in your province, then it would be the best time to go back there and look for a nursing job. Manila hospitals are already congested with nurses available and your only luck is the training that they offer. Working as a nurse is worthwhile even though receiving a low salary than doing trainings where you have to pay the hospital. It will only be an advantage if the hospital will absorb you after the training. Keep those plans concrete as possible, like which hospital choices will you apply to, set deadline or due date, etc. As of the moment, being realistic is the key than painting a blurry picture.

Wow northst4r!!!:yeah:

That is inspiring. Tomorrow I will start my volunteer program. The staff are super pleasant. I also enrolled for MAN. I talked to other volunteers that are also in the program who are ahead of me. They have nothing but praises for this hospital. The training head is so generous in imparting knowledge. I think this is better than not doing anything.

wow. I admired all your dreams. :D

as for my plans,

first, to be a RN by August 2008 :D

second, I'm currently having my review in English Conversation Fluency in SP (just taking the chance - because I have 1 year free review. I just enrolled in that course last year. and also, that would help me in preparing myself for a job interview.)

third, to find a job - as a call center agent (to be more at ease in speaking the language/to develop my conversation fluency using the English language. It might also help me in IELTS. I also want to earn already, be somewhat independent and to buy and do the things that I want.) I might also enroll in a training of Redcross while waiting for the result of the job interview.

fourth, to find a job as a RN - after I get my license. and if I can't get a job as a RN, I'll continue with my job in a call center.

fifth, I also want to enhance the other aspect of myself. I love nursing - I love what I had learned and experienced in this field. Yes, I graduated BSN, but I don't want to locked myself in just one area. I want to try interior designing too (even though I'm not good in drawing. I'm kinda afraid in taking that course. but I want to try it.) I also want to save up for voice and cooking lesson, and a seminar in photography. I don't know, but I really want to learn a lot of things. I want to learn things that I could use and also, as a personal growth - I love learning. But my fifth plan would come true after I had saved up enough money and I think, I'm already working in a hospital by that time (because after working in a call center, I want to work in a hospital for a year or two.)

sixth, I would also attend seminars in nursing or do anything that would update myself in the profession.

seventh, I want to work as a nurse in Australia (I really want to stay in NZ--my dream.. after I saw the documentary in that country 4+ years ago..but mom told me that I don't know anyone there, unlike in Australia, my Aunt and her family are there. I know, I could visit that country when I'm an Australia - they're near each other.) I also want to travel in a lot of places here on Earth.

eight, I would go back here in the Philippines and work as a nurse and help those who are in need of my service after I saved up enough money to build an apartment (as a source of living) and to live here already..

those are my plans.. :) I hope that they would come true. I would really work hard for it.

thank you for this thread.. I love reading the dreams of other people.. :D

Apple25 I also admire your plans...I am not going to discourage you on your plans to take call center as a temporary solution to not finding a job. I have tried but most call center companies are no longer taking nurses as agents since they know that eventually you will resign and have a real nursing job. I tried it but since I really can't deny the fact that I intend to become a nurse they did not consider me for the job post. I am really a lousy liar. I passed their exams but failed the final interview. It is quite understandable that HR will consider somebody who will stay longer with the company.

Hello misspowers...just want to ask what hospital are you having tyour volunteer program?thanks

thank you misspowers :D I think, I'll think very well for the white lies that I would tell them in order to work in their company or in a call center :D thank you very much again :D

After passing my NLE last Dec. '07, I trained in the Red Cross for the basics-- 1st aid and CPR (they weren't provided at school) then while waiting for the next IV Therapy schedule and ACLS, i had started to work as a Company Nurse so that I could be able to pay for my own trainings and help out at home. I know volunteering is the best way to go but i can't rely anymore on my parents for money-- and training in hospitals ain't cheap.

Also, after the NCLEX (hopefully within this year) I'd try my hand out in EMT Training. If and when I accomplish all these, I'd look out for more training programs just to keep myself in tiptop shape before applying for actual hospital experience.

:D

Whew!!! My first day was tiring but very challenging. I was assigned at ER. I really hate making small girls cry...skin testing and injections makes me a villain!!!! I really hate it when they stare and all of a sudden burst into tears:crying2:.

Btw, my training is free of charge. My only expense is my commuting fee (including the food). Xinnamon you are lucky to even be hired as a company nurse. Again, I am a lousy liar, once they knew that I am already a NCLEX and IELTS passer they will consider somebody who has no plans yet to take up NCLEX. I think this is why most of the big hospitals are asking for training fees.

Oh I almost forgot, I'm volunteering at Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital, tala Caloocan. The former leprosarium. They still have Hansen patients once in a while. :D

Overall experience for me is superb. I guess the best part of the exposure is you learn how to deal with grumpy doctors (The likes of Sarcastic Cr. House)
