Textbook questions are fine as long as they're not taken verbatim from the book. It's questions from the actual exam that cannot be discussed in any forum, since the Canadian Nurses' Association included a clause in the exam application that states candidates will not discuss actual exam questions in order to preserve the validity of the testing method.

I would say A and I try not to guess.

B is a good advice but what doesn't apply to air born precaution. One can use alcohol gel but sneez or cough all the time.

C there is no indication that children under 5 can't visit unless they are sick.

D It's a good advice but not better than A.

Good question though. Makes you think.

I've found a good question from the book which I put it here in a different formate.

The cardiac system of a pregnant client with a cardiac condition will be more most compromised during:

a. 1st trimester

b. 3rd trimester

c. transitional phase

d. first two days after delivery

This is a reworded question, I think we are not allowed to post exact questions from textbooks.

A family likes to visit their 95 year old grandmother who lives in a nursing home. What is an important advice for the nurse to provide to the family in order to prevent their mother from communicable disease?

A. Do not visit if they feel sick

B. Use alcohol gel hand wash before entering the room

C. Do not bring children under 5 years to visit

D. In case of coughing/sneezing use disposable tissue

Sorry for any grammar errors.

The answer to this question is B.

A is not correct because not everyone shows s/s at the beginning of a communicable disease therefore they can be symptomatic

C The nursing home has no policy on who can/cannot visit

D This is a good choice but answer B is better

B is the most correct answer because it is taking precaution.

I am going to say B because of the entire labour and delivery process. Otherwise i have no clue really.

It's actually d. I picked up c first as well. Here's the rational.

a can't be correct because during the 1st trimester the increased amount of circulating blood volume is minimal.

b is not correct because the increase in blood volume occurs gradually as the pregnancy progress and usually pregnant

women with cardiac problem closely are monitored during this time.

c although there's an increased risk of stress on the heart during delivery close monitoring and the use of meds that provides rest and pain relief help to decrease this stress.

d is correct because this is the time that the body faces a rapid fluid shift. Extravascular fluid returns to the bloodstream and this put a huge strain on heart that can lead to cardiac decompensation.

Good job Renzlao on the question. Do you have a good question to post?

I found a great case on maternity. Sarah is 30 weeks gestation and is attending education classes with her husband Andrew. Minett is the nurse.

1.Sarah says to Minett, "I am worried about gaining too much weight because I heard that I will never get rid of this weight gain." What is Minett's best response.

a) A weight gain of 7-8 kG is recommended

b) If you have gained over 5 kG, you should start a low calorie diet

c) Don't worry about pregnancy weight. the health of your baby is your concern.

d) an 11-15 kg weight gain is recommended to allow for proper growth of the baby. It should not cause you to be overweight afterwards

I pick d.

An average wt. gain of 11.9 to 15.8 is normal during pregnancy.

fetus account for 3.5 kg; blood volume for 1.5 t0 2 kg. fluid retention about 1.8 to 2.7 kg; amniotic fluid

1 to 1.5 kg; uterus 1.5 kg; placenta 0.7 to 0.9 kg, breast 0.5 to 0.7 kg, and finally fat for 1.8 to 3.0 kg.

So after pregnancy, the mom pretty much returns close to prepregnancy period. This specially is true when the mom starts breastfeeding because the increase of calori.

some quick facts:

1. A sudden, sharp increase in wt. near 20th week of pregnancy may indicate fluid retention and the beginning of preeclampsia.

2. a wt. gain of at least 11.3kg is recommended during pregnancy.

3. Fetus counts for the largest portion of wt. gain during pregnancy.

4. Dieting is absolutely forbidden during pregnancy and can cause congentinal anomalies.

what else you guys can add to this?

I Pick D for that previous Question. The average weight gain should be 25-35lb to prevent intrauterine growth retardation. It is also important to monitor weight in regards to PIH.

1st trimester 3lb

2nd trimester 12lb

3rd trimester 12lb
