Question regarding MN/NP program..

I just have a few questions about getting into an Masters in Nursing/ NP program.

I am currently working at a hospital as a Casual position in a Rehabilitation Unit while also working as a Casual in Residential Care/ Nursing Home. I am waiting to get oriented for the Medical Unit and will be picking up hours as soon as I finish my orientation.

I worked at a Nursing/Rehabilitation home in US and Canada for 2.5 years prior to getting into a hospital. It's a long story why I didn't get into a hospital in the first place..

Long story short I have always been interested in becoming a Nurse Practitioner as I have a huge interest in public health and primary care. (I also currently volunteer at a hospital and used to volunteer in public health fairs etc when I did my Bachelor's program in the states)

I am now looking into some programs... but I know some schools require experience and recommendation letters from current hospital unit and from previous school instructors or faculty in order to fulfil the Masters in Nursing requirement.

My main questions are:

1. Does it really matter what area you get experience from to get into an NP program in Canada?? Many schools say it requires 2-3 years of Full Time experience in a clinical setting but does not specify the area.

2. It's been 3 years since I graduated from my University in the States and I haven't kept in touch with any of my instructors since graduating.... How should I go about getting a recommendation letter from my previous University faculty member/instructor??

I still have a long ways ahead of me, but I just wanted to know my options so I can start planning for my future

If you haven't kept in contact with any of your faculty, writing a recommendation letter will not be as easy for them. Start emailing faculty that knew you well and thought highly of your academic skills. Inform them of your plans and request a reference.

Most graduate programs require 3-5 years experience in a clinical setting. This depends upon your area of interest or stream that you intend to study.

Depending when you wish to begin grad school, start gathering your documentation and drafting letters early. I am applying to programs for fall 2016. My referees are in place, my letter of intent has been drafted and I'm soon ready to apply. Most deadlines are January or February for fall classes. Your referees will need at least three months notice since they are busy with their own projects.
