Medication Administration Certificate- is this worth taking?

Hello everyone!

I would like to ask for your advice about the Medication Administration Certificate- I'm looking into taking this at Humber College.

The certificate consists of three courses:

-IV Therapy/Phlebotomy

-Medication Administration Theory

-Medication Administration Lab

About me: I'm a new graduate nurse (Registered Practical Nurse). When I look through job postings online, I usually see hospitals asking for a Medication Administration and Health Assessment certificates. I talked to my other nursing peers who have years of nursing experience, and they said these courses are unnecessary because the hospital will train you with IV initiation/therapy. I'm kind of puzzled now. What do you think- should I take this course?

Nope, not necessary.

I think it's possibly a relic from the old days when RPN education wasn't "up to snuff" so to speak, or for older nurses who are out of practice or don't have the diploma and are looking for work. I could be wrong. Either way, we don't need it.

If you just graduated, medication administration and health assessment wouldve been included. If necessary, carry a copy of your lab course outlines to the interview.

Your hospital will train you in venipuncture when you get the job.

If you're applying and no response and wondering why, unfortunately that's just how it is right now for many of us. It took me 7 months to start working. I only had one interveiw that whole time. My group of friends found jobs same time I did. It's not easy out there
