Degree recognized in Canada

I have an ASN/BSN degree in the USA and I am currently working in the USA. I am a Canadian citizen and would like to move back to Canada (Ontario). I understand that this could be a lengthy process. I am wondering if there is anyone on this board who has had their ASN/BSN degree recognized by the NNAS as comparable?

if it's an American BSN from an accredited school, it should definitely be comparable. You don't need to submit English test results and in case for BC, you probably will not need to take SEC either and get your license straight away after processing. For other provinces you might be asked to take the assessment tests (sec/osce). It really depends but I applied to BC with American BSN and did not have to do the SEC test and my education was accepted.

Really? That is encouraging to hear. Was this recently? Did you have a straight BSN or a ASN/BSN combo?

If you search 'NNAS' using the search tool in the top right hand corner, you will see there are US BSN educated nurses whose NNAS report was not comparable to a Canadian BSN.

@companisbiki was your education assessed prior to August 2014? If so, it was not assessed by NNAS, but by the education assessment service that CRNBC was using at that time.

I'm curious about this too. Does anyone know of a BSN nurse from the USA who got a comparable rating from the NNAS? Thanks in advance!

bobacia, even if the NNAS report says your education is comparable/somewhat comparable, CNO may require you to do the OSCE.

When are you planning to move back to Ontario? Can you stay and work in the US until all of your assessments with NNAS and CNO are completed?

That's exactly what I plan on doing. Right now, the my university is getting a 'mostly favororable to favorable' rating from the NNAS. Grads are still required to take the skills test. Do you know of any resources to help prepare for it?

My younger sister plans to attend the same university that I just graduated from (for a BSN degree). She has been accepted in great nursing schools in Canada, but wants to get her degree here. She also plans to get back into Canada to practice nursing. Its a great nursing school with good rankings and I feel that its done a great job prepping me the be a nurse. I'm curious from the 4,000 NNAS applicants that apply every year, how many of those are able to practice nursing within a year from point of application. Are most told to go back to school?

If you have to do the OSCE you should review; IENCAP Participant Guide from Touchstone Institute, the CNO Competencies for of entry-level registered nurse practice, the standards of practice for registered nurses and review medical surgical nursing textbooks.
