I've been looking for signs of burnout, I found them...

They're supposed to be funny and really they are but sadly some of them definately do apply to me.

10. You're so tired, you now answer the phone with "Go to Hell."

9. Your friends call to ask how you've been, and you immediately scream, "Stop asking me all these damn questions!"

8. Your garbage can IS your "In" box.

7. You wake up to discover your house is on fire, but go back to sleep because you just don't care.

6. You consider a 40 hour week a vacation.

5. Visions of the upcoming weekend help you make it through Monday.

4. You don't set your alarm anymore because you know your pager will go off before your alarm does.

3. You leave for a party and instinctively bring your ID badge.

2. Your Day Timer/Work Planner exploded a week ago.

And the NUMBER ONE sign that you are burned out because of work.....

1. You think about how relaxing it would be if you were in jail right now.

(((((((((Dutchgirl)))))))))))))) We don't know each other but I've been following your other post (think you were right btw ). I'm only a nursing student (1st semester even) and found that 3/4 of those apply to me right now. I can see the humor in them, but they are also sooooo true - number 1 sounds like a really great vacation for me right now!!!!

I've had visions going to "Camp Cupcake" and crocheting a poncho to wear when I get out. I'd probably get myself into trouble so I could stay awhile longer. Interestingly burnout is not caused by stress. So the articles say. It's more of a extreme emotional and physical fatigue. Hey I'm a TN girl too!
Thanks for your support.

You too southernLPN. We GRITS have got to stick together. My husband wants me to be a "red hatter" now. I say "no way Jose". I'm too young for that !

Hmmmmmm, emotional and physical exhaustion - yep that would be me. Let's go to Camp Cupcake together!!!!!!!!!

I'm in the tri-cities area just southeast of Kingsport. Where are you hiding in TN? I must say that I wasn't born and raised here so I'm not a true GRIT but I'm quickly embracing the life.

lol. I was so burnout in nursing I got out completely, after only 9 years. We moved to the country and we're raising goats and chickens while I drool on myself and homeschool our kids. I SOOO prefer animals to humans. Now I don't know if I'll ever go back to nursing, hope I won't have to but it's good to still keep my license up.

I liked the jail one...it reminds me of driving home after 3 16 hour night shift in ICU and almost falling asleep, thinking, "Well, at least I'll get some sleep when I'm dead or in the hospital." Then I remembered how we just keep bugging people in the trauma bay and pulled myself together.

In regards to nursing burnout, what is the average amount of years a nurse gets to burnout? And what can we do, if any, to prevent it?

When walking out from work and one of the cars almost backed over me I said with a chuckle "go ahead and back over me so I can lie down"

LOL--someone threatened to have me arrested in the emerg where I work and I put my hands together in front of me and stated "Here take me.....look around, do you think I want to stay here?" The family backed off and left.....and they left me there....I just wanted to go to jail......for a nice hot meal, some solitary confinement and an education........

North of Nashville. Camp Cupcake sounds lovely. This is the time of year you can win an award for having the best homemade Christmas decorations. Martha's group lost last year, imagine that!

I used to live in Clarksville (dh is active duty). Maybe Martha's group decided not to listen to a know-it-all I'm sure we could do much better!!!!!! Although after the last couple days, I'm starting to think a quiet, padded room in the funny farm will work even better. Wanna join me there????
