Where are new grads being hired right now?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I would like to get an idea of whats happening with new grads across the country. Where are new grads actually being hired? What are the stats on the new grad programs (how many apply for how many postions, etc.) Please share what you know about your state/region on the new grad outlook.

Any state that is hiring new nurses? California is so tight right now. Many unemployed nurses

Hi Jhade!

I have the same situation as you. It's going to be more difficult for us since our training and education is from a different country. We just have to be resourceful and keep looking.

What state are you license in?

I made the huge mistake of moving to CA as a new grad...there are basically no jobs here for new grads (those they do exist are CUTTHROAT). I am looking for states that are hiring too...I am 99.9% sure I will be moving to a different state to get my first new grad job. I recently had a couple interviews for positions in TX...one they chose another candidate and I am waiting to hear back from the other.

Glad to hear you have some interviews. I am from CA and have expanded my search as far as TX so far. Hopefully I will hear something soon. I am just wondering what part of TX you are applying to? El Paso had a lot of opportunities the last time I looked. Just curious, the interviews you had for the TX hospitals, were they over the phone or did you need to fly out there?

Luckily they were Skype interviews, for Midland Memorial Hospital (west TX...middle of nowhere, haha) because I can't afford to fly out every time I have a an out-of-state interview! It's hard too, figuring out which states have the most jobs because I obviously can't get my RN license for every state...some jobs say you have so many days to get the state RN license but others say it's already required which is frustrating when you are searching for jobs, umm, everywhere!

I think I might have found a hospital that hires new grads, but it is in a desolate area of California. Basically, most people wouldn't consider living in such a place. It is located in the Northern most part of California, near the Oregon border. I started looking for smaller, less urban hospitals a while back, but had no luck. The recruiter was very nice. He spoke with me for about ten minutes, over the phone. He said that I would be trained in their four bed acute care unit, the ED and their skilled nursing facility. I am definitely going to apply. It has been two years since I graduated, and RN positions in the city are hard to get. Start looking at border towns!!

That's how I got my start. After a couple of years, other doors starting opening up.

By going rural, you will miss out on some experiences but you will have opportunities that wouldn't present themselves in larger facilities.

What's the name of the hospital? :)

I'm on the same boat at you are Tinkerbell!

DON'T GIVE UP! i'm from ca (so cal) and have yet to score my first rn job. i graduated 4 YEARS AGO...yes, you read that right--FOUR. i'm not ashamed because i've been doing other productive things. anyway, i applied to a major world-class facility that is super hard to get into in another another state. i openly put "graduated 2008" on my resume and discussed it in my cover letter. there's no way they missed that nugget. never thought i'd even be in the running but they called me for a phone screen! :w00t: now a phone screen isn't an interview and i have to wait like a week or two to see if i made it to the next round. but even if i didn't, the fact that they called at all is awesome. yes, you might have graduated a long time ago, but i urge you to consider other places because you never know unless you apply. good luck to all of us!!! :yelclap:

Good luck Hollarz! Applesncherries, I will pm you the info. This place is in the middle of no man's land.

Haha yeah sounds terrible (insert sarcasm). Basically, many people love far north California.
