Were you a new grad who had to move out of state?

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I am thinking of applying to RN jobs out of Chicago, IL, but I am a tad bit afraid of relocating to a place that I am unfamiliar with and not knowing anyone.

For those who relocated for an RN job, can you share your experience, whether it is good or bad.

Thank you! :)

I relocated for my first nursing job... well, sort of.

In my case, my job was hundreds of miles away and I would be away from home for 4-5 days each week while I worked. Some weeks I would just stay over for my days off.

It was stressful, to be sure, but it was also a bit of an adventure. I met people, made friends, developed a support system.

When I was first a college graduate many years ago, I relocated far from home for my first job. It, too, was stressful - having to find a place to live, not knowing a soul, not knowing the city (LA), etc. Over time, I connected and integrated and it was fine.

Don't worry about moving away from home; it's stressful and a bit scary but it's OK... and it's a natural part of life.

I didn't relocate out of state, but I did relocate to an entirely different part of the state I was in, where I didn't know anyone or have any connections other than having been hired into a position in the specialty of my choice. It wasn't the easiest thing I've ever done, but it was a great experience overall. I ended up liking the area so much that I have made it my permanent home (although I've changed jobs multiple times and even moved temporarily to a few other states since then).

Thank you for sharing your experiences! I really appreciate it! I will definitely apply to facilities outside of Chicago, and if I get hired then I will just accept it and hope for the best. Especially since it is so hard to find a job in the Chicago area. Crossing my fingers I'll find a job soon. And If I happen to relocate, I'll make the best out of it. Thanks!!! :)

I relocated down to florida to be near family and I've been struggling 7months to get an rn job bc I don't have any connections and I don't have a schools affiliations to help with career placement. Thats y I'm considering applying to msn program to further my education amd have some affilations of a school. Its a lot harder to find a job in a state where u dont have the connections of a school or people you know who can put in a good word for u.
