Nurses Job Hunt

So I just graduated a week ago and I started working again as an aide at my current job in subacute care. Today my manager ultimatumed me and told me that once I pass boards she will give me a part time job but if I don't want it she is giving the position to someone else. She also said that I need to stay with the company if I'm going to work for them so I don't waste their money. Well the only thing is that the job is part time and I have loans coming up that I will be barely able to pay with a part time salary... Let alone I need the benefits of full time. I also wanted to start out in a hospital. I've been applying to hospitals and I've gotten no luck. I told her I would be interested in the position but I'm still scared because it's not exactly what I wanted. And I would feel bad looking for something else while I'm working there. Also I feel like I need to take the job with how bad the market is because I don't want to be an old new grad if I don't find something else... What should I do?

I'd be surprised if you couldn't pick up shifts that others want off or aren't filled to make up some of the time.

I guess it depends on your area but I'd take a part time job over no job.

I would take a part-time job and keep on looking. I would also consider branching out a little bit too than just hospitals. Also, a lot of places do wait till you are licensed before calling you back.

Carefully word what you say, and ask for full-time work, or at least a part time job that will lead to full time within the course of a few months

Thank you for the responses! And I was planning on looking after boards because a lot of places want to wait until then but they want me to start working right when I pass. I was called later today for a hospital interview so I'm going to see what happens with that to further make my decision and discuss that with my manager.

I passed boards in Feb and accepted my first RN position this afternoon. About 200 resume/applications and 5 interviews with various systems later.....

It is part time, I'll pick up a shift or two a week to make up some if the difference. It's so worth it to get my foot in the door.

There's little loyalty in healthcare anymore. Don't feel bad. You need to take care of your own career. Don't burn bridges and DEFINITELY don't be too picky about where you work as a new grad, but don't get bullied around either. See what else is out there, and if your current facility is comparable, stick with it. If not, it may be time to quietly start shopping elsewhere.
