New Grad Emergency PSYCH Interview!

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello all,

I am having an interview next week for a position at the ER department of a psychiatric hospital!

I just have no idea what to expect. I'm going to be interviewed by a panel of three.

I'm going to start brushing up on my mental status assessments and my meds, but does anybody know what questions they will ask? I don't have any professional ER experience but I do volunteer at a distress center.

It's my dream job, I just don't know if they will think I am ready for it.

thank you SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!! :)

Google behavior based interview questions.. "Tell me about a time..". You may see those

Specializes in Psych ICU, addictions.

Start brushing up on basic psych meds. Know what the serious side effects of psychotropics are (e.g., NMS) and how they would be managed.

Know your therapeutic communication and deescalation techniques. Also know the signs that a person is escalating. In a psych ER, you are going to see the worst of the worst, and you are going to be right in the front lines. You need to know how to interact with these patients and how to stop a bad situation from getting worse.

Since you'll probably see a lot of impaired/drunk patients, know the signs of intoxication for common drugs, their withdrawal processes, and how the detox is managed.

Best of luck!
