I want to cry! still can't find a nursing job...

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

A cloud of desperation is looming over my head, I am starting to regret the fact that I went to nursing school. I graduated last August (2012), got my license 8 months ago and still no job. Not even one interview. I have applied to over 100 positions already and yet not one call back. I realize that things are hard out there for new grads but I didn't think it would be so bad. I really feel inadequate because I am still not working. My sweet husband has been so supportive during nursing school is probably wondering why can't I find a job, although he is still very supportive, and won't admit that he needs me to step up and help out with the bills. I don't want to give you my whole life story but what can I do to get even one interview? That would surely boost my confidence. Also I should mention that most of my classmates who were able to secure a job had to move out of Massachusetts. I don't have that option because I am taking care of my elderly mother. Is there anything I can do to make my resume more attractive? Any hospital or nursing home you know of that is hiring new grad nurses? SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!!!! I am dying here. Any advise would be greatly appreciated...:sour::bluecry1::cry:

I wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you and I am sorry for the situation you are in. If it makes you feel any better at all, I am in the same boat. Although I have not been looking as long as you the fact that I can't seem to get a single interview is very very discouraging. Keep your head up and don't give up!

If there are still posters out there willing to look over resumes and cover letters I would love to send you mine. A second eye never hurts!

I am willing to look at your résumé. Just send me a PM and I will reply with my email address.

What exactly do you say to a nurse recruiter even if you called or emailed? Still puzzled as to how they function and what they want to hear.

Hope you're feeling better with all the support I see from everyone! I'm in the same boat as you!

Seriously, you gotta know someone! All the friends have who've gotten jobs have known someone. With that being said, it's not too late to make friends :) by volunteering or something. Or reaching out to any old professors/contacts/preceptor!

Try "Family Lives" out of Westborough, pediatric and adult home care for eastern MA, they hire new RNs.

I haven't been looking as long as you but I feel like my nursing knowledge and motor-cognition are deteriorating, I am extremely anxious everyday, and heading towards severe depression. My situation is compounded by the fact that I have never held a job, had an interview, or a routine volunteering stint. Now I am confused as to what to do. There is LTC but I'm not sure I could handle the load, considering my personality. I did research here and many were saying it's much harder than hospitals. I am considering getting a starter PT job, unrelated to nursing, just for experience but everyone will be like you have your BSN-RN and this is what you're doing....

Any advice??

I feel for you. I went to school in Boston, graduated in 2008, and moved to Vermont for my first job. Between my husband's sick father and my sick mother, deciding to leave was very, very hard. Most of my classmates who got Nursing Jobs had to leave the state. The ones who stayed found jobs in home health, adult day programs, and LTC, though a surprising number of LTCs wanted experience.

If you live near a state line, have you considered getting licensed in a neighboring state? Hospitals in rural New Hampshire and Vermont are looking for nurses. Have you considered home health? Apparently, there are agencies in MA that hire new grads.
