I got a JOB!

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Have been a frequent lurker and am so psyched to finally be able to post this....many many months after graduation I was just offered my dream nursing job.

Just wanted to say don't give up....I was about to give up and get a waitressing job to pay all the overdue bills and got two offers in as many weeks. You just never know when it's finally going to happen, so don't give up!

CONGRATS!!! :w00t:

We are waiting for the details

Thanks all of you so much! Sorry to be a tease :), but I'm a bit paranoid that somehow I'll be recognized if I give too many details and then won't be able to post whatever I want. But, I think a bit of info is ok....the reason it is my dream job is it is in a small medical practice in a field that I have a lot of interest in. I've never been gung ho about working in the typical new nurse setting such as a hospital or nursing home (Actually lasted a couple months in a nursing home til they fired me for getting sick and having to call out for my shift to go to the ER, but I digress). So, I had been applying to anything that interested me, and was still open to working in a position that I didn't like just to get experience. But, I came across this position which sounded perfect for my particular background. I applied even though the description said that it required a few years experience. And viola, the rest is history. I'd be lucky to have a job like this come along ever, never mind as a new nurse. Finally, it shows that sometimes when your very first job doesn't work out it really is a blessing in disguise.

Congratulations! We are so happy for you :yelclap:

Specializes in geriatrics.

I am sorry if I missed this info somewhere: Are you a new grad, it looks like yes since you mentioned "after graduation" but I wondered if you had any experience as a CNA or LPN before you graduated Nursing school?

And I was going to ask more about your dream job, how exciting! but I think the next poster does, and I will read on to see what it's all about!

Congratulations!! I graduate in May, is why I am asking, and am very worried about getting a job, just the number of LPNs in my class as well as most of them working now and probably will move right into a position, and every job I see wants a year experience, but since I've been in Nursing school for 2 years I am stating all that I have done, units I rotated on, and I had a summer PCT II position at the level II trauma center in my county, so hopefully that will help. I am single mom of 2, both ADD/ADHD and only people who can watch them just were not available for me to keep the job full-time, then went to pool, then with 3rd semester coming at that time, I talked to the RN Manager; no big deal she says, "just resign because of school hours, for now" and because I'll "be an outstanding nurse" and all but gauranteed me job upon graduation, applied at a few positions at the facility and called to talk to her; she is not there anymore! How does an RN Manager of the Emergency Room in the only Level II Trauma facility in the county up and leave/be dismissed within 8 months!!!! Anyway, I no longer have hope for that hospital, and certainly not getting back into the ER. The recruiter who set me up with the RN Manager for interview last summer called me last week and said there are a ton of "internals" waiting for ER, so I probably won't get in until I'm an RN on another unit and then apply.....

Anyway, enough of my discouraging crap LOL. I cannot wait to hear about your blessing of dream job (that was my dream job at trauma hospital is why I thought of my dream job), hope you love it and are very happy there.

I hear your frustration...to answer your question, no I did not work as an LPN or Nursing Assistant during school or at any time prior to graduation...I had tried to find a position as a nursing assistant but did not have any luck. A few people from my class secured assistant positions at the two hospitals in this area which still have new grad programs and were hired as RNs prior to graduation. Many new grad programs don't consider you unless you already work there. Anyway, what I did was to strongly emphasize my clinical skills learned in rotations, i.e., took up half a page on my resume with a two-column list of skills. I would definitely apply for jobs that require or prefer one year experience. My first, albeit short-term, job in an LTC was a job that required one year. Apparently, if they do not get applicants with that experience, they move onto new grads. In fact, the dream job I just got required a few years of experience. So, you never know. Just keep applying and consider a geographical change, if only temporary, if you are able to move.

Hey, thanks for inspiring us and congrats on the dream job! :)

Thank you all so much!!!
