My Conundrum

Hi all,

I finally had my job interview for the PN teaching position. I hope I did well. There were 3 people who applied but only 2 were granted interview on Thursday I am due to meet with the college president. What are the typical things that a college president may ask? I am getting anxious.

My other dillema is if I do get this teaching position I will have a conflict in my work schedule this class is an evening class designed for non traditional adult students it starts Thursday 4pm-9pm, Friday 4pm - 8pm and all day saturday clinicals. I normally work Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights 7pm-7am.

I had spoken with my manager and told her my dillema and I was glad that she is open about this. she knew that I really want to teach but I can't afford to lose my regular job as financially just on the teaching salary alone it's not feasible to live on. I can still work Saturday nights and sunday but Friday I really can't do it. I don't want to lose my weekend option nights as it means losing money and it would actually work for me as I will have time for prep for my class during the week. I need suggestions for creative solutions for this.

I really don't want to leave my present position as I have been here for 6 years and 16 years nursing experience. I love my job and my area I know there is a lot on my manager's desk right now because just last week 5 nurses left our department and I don't want to add to that. so Help! any suggestions are welcome.

Can you change your Friday teaching day to Wednesday?

hi that is what I suggested to do to my manager change friday to one of the week nights from Monday to Tuesday the thing is our department to be considered weekend option is Friday, Saturday and Sunday but I learned from HR it does not always apply so weekends in other departments is saturday and sunday and the one night can be any night from monday - Thurs so this is another option but it really depends in manager's discretion and the need of the unit my manager assured me we will deal with it until I get a positive answer from the college if not my other alternative is I really don't want to do it but I might be forced to go to another unit that can accommodate my schedule. Another factor to consider is that the teaching schedule cannot be changed as I posted it is an evening class for non traditional students so most of the students are working through the week and that is their time to be in class thurs, friday and saturday.

Wanted to add that I have a few friends that teach PN and they use A LOT of their free time in class planning, grading papers, tests, and care plans. Way more than she ever expected, a few hours each night after working mon-thurs at teaching and clinicals. Hoping you won't be too busy!

good luck!

I have always wanted to teach as well

The questiosn that I was asked by the president included things such as "How do you see yourself incorporating our schools mission and values statement within your curriculum?" or "Do you feel a liberal arts college is the preferable choice for a nursing program, is so why?" The biggest thing I have learned is to know the school you are applying to. Definitely know in advance what the mission statement is. I hope this helps.
