Contemplate w/ I finish nursing school, I'll be a vibrant, strong 52 (or am now).

Good question however: If work in a hospital, whether med-surg, icu, hopefully er later, will a pre-existing condition preclude me from obtaining the health insurance I find necessary for doc visits and Rx? Have catastrophic but this ain't enough.

Everything's changing fast but would appreciate any input. This is my only stumbling block to pursuing this career full-on; I now the warnings.

BTW: I set up a poll that was stupid: I forgot to ask: FORGET NURSING, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GOOD HEALTHCARE WITH A PRE-EXISTING, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE!!

Really hoping for helpful input; this would be so appreciated.

It depends on how big the hospital is. Check w/the Human Resources Dept (or whoever does benefits @ that institution)' they WILL know! They will also have a brochure that explains all the benefits they offer, and if there is a choice of insurance plans. If possible, apply to a hospital that is part of a University, State or Gov't system. You'll probably get the most coverage there, @ least I would think so. Don't panic yet. There's something out there for you!!

Funny, I called some hospitals re: their health plan policies and getting info was like pulling teeth (Human Resources). It seems that University Hospitals are the best but my dream is to work in a rural ER say in Las Vegas, New Mexico, anywhere w/wilderness/mountains nearby! (someplace to be sane in time off, if any)...

Problem is that these smaller hospitals have lesser health plans, according to one nurse.

Also, I was told that they HAVE to hire you, regardless pre-existings (that I find hard to believe in these times, and this'll get only worse I think). But they will exclude one for approx. 6 mo. to a year w/pre-existings.

Never thought of this in my 20s, but then, who did?
