question: is my bf stuck in Psych Nursing?

Nurses Career Support

Overview: My boyfriend graduated this past December and got hired as a Psych RN. He has been working almost 6months on the floor (also its the total time as a nurse).

Problem: He wonders if he is becoming pigeon holed in this specific part of nursing. He is afraid he may not be able to be hired in other areas like ER or on a "more medical-like floor". He feels this way because he doesn't use a lot of the skills he learned in school, hardly any of his medical knowledge.

Question If he puts a year of his time on the psych floor, will that keep him from being hired in other areas of nursing?

I appreciate the advice!

thanks,

I dont think he will pigeon holed. I am a new grad who recently changed. I was an lpn for a year on a med surg floor and have just accepted a position in ER. When I gave my notice my manager said that she often sees new grads "trying to find their niche" and she would never fault anyone for exploring their options. I think in nursing, we would LOVE to see new grads stay in their positions forever, but with the diversity in nursing that just isn't so.

Good luck!! and tell him to enjoy his experience. It might actually make him MORE marketable, not everyone will have psych experience.
