Nurses Career Support

This is really long!! and i dont know where to start..I am an new grad (May). In March I had an interview with a nurse manager for a position I really wanted and a friend on the unit had given her my cv and resume (I had shadowed her on my own time etc). She told me during the interview that the position would probably open up in late August d/t whole unit moving. Before I had even arrived home from interview she called to say she wanted me to meet with hr so that everything would be complete when the time came. So I met with hr a week later and I think it went well. Hr tells me to call when I have a date to take my boards. Call when I get my date..she says call when you pass.( I know this is getting long!! ) So I call when I pass in July! She tells me there is still no external openings because there was a lot of moving around internally and unit move had been pushed back. Since then I have spoken with the nurse manager and hr and both keep telling me to call back and be patient but there is still no external positions. The nurse manager (who I speak to the most) tells me my app is still there and encourages to keep checking in. My husband tells me to give up on this place but it is really where I want to be.

So in the mean time I have interviewed at other places and the one other place I was interested in the nurse manager told me she would love to have me and hr told me she would call me a week. She called but told me there were only two positions to start and admin took one down and the other was filled by someone who had hospital experience. She told me to keep looking at the website and call back and check in. There has been nothing (it has been two weeks). So am I just being strung along? Does hr usually just flat out say "no, we are not interested? or do I have a chance at these places.. I hope this all makes sense..need opiniions please!! Obvi I am still applying to to other places. I don't know if I am being patient or lookiing desperate!! I would rather be told no flat out then obsess about it all the time!!??? Sorry told you this was long winded..

Specializes in ER.

the one that you really want, that is stringing you along, I'd move on. If they call you after you have found another position, well you can always leave that place if the money/shift/time is right. As for the other one that had an internal position and they took another with experience, that's how it goes sometimes. Keep looking - you're a new nurse, so once something comes up, take it! That will get you experience and then you can move on later after you get a good year or so in. Just get your foot in the door somewhere. Keep your contacts and keep in touch with them!

If it were me, I'd start looking for another job. In the meantime, if that first hospital finally makes a concrete offer, you can take it; if not, say nothing until you receive another palatable offer. Then tell that first hospital that you've got another offer, and though you'd love to work for them, if they don't put an offer on the table, you've got to move on. If they really want you, they'll make their move. If not, you've lost nothing.

Thanks for the replies..I know that I should move on but it's hard not to cling to any hope with the slim pickings out there...Most posts around here talk about hr not calling back at all or sending them a rejection letter/email. So is it normal for them call to say when one is available I could be hired. One told me she hopes to see me soon (first one ) and second one said I interviewed great but there was just no position anymore but maybe in few weeks. Looking into stuff way too much..Don't worry I drive myself crazy too ..LOL!!
