Moving from NJ to San Diego

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi, my fiance and I are planning to move from New Jersey to San Diego. I am a Registered Nurse and have been for two years with Ortho and medsurg experience. What is the current pay rate for RNs in San Diego please and also where would be a safe and affordable place to live. We also have a 3 year old daughter.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to allnurses.com, kamnthompson! We're the largest and busiest nursing social network site on the Web and I know there will be someone out there who can give you the info you need. (It's not me... but I can promise you the weather is better in San Diego!)

Hey! Welcome to sunny San Diego! You are looking at about 35-40/hour in the hospital setting with your experience. I live in North county San Diego and it is very affordable by San Diego standards. If you are looking to rent a home in North county you are looking at around 1600-1800/month for a 3-4 bedroom home with a yard in a nice neighborhood. You could also rent a 2 bedroom duplex for about 1200-1400/month and save up for a home. If you are looking to buy, homes in nice neighborhoods cost about 400,000-600,000 depending on the area.

Thank you so much, that really helped. The pay seems low compared to the cost of living but I guess with certifications and more experience comes an increase. I hope there are jobs out there, different posts suggest there might not be a lot of job opportunities.

It's one of the toughest markets in California, maybe us. So yes, it's true. Make sure you have a fat cash cushion if you move without an offer in hand. There are tons of threads on the ca forum.
