Nurses Career Support

Specializes in ED.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a basic Job Search question. This is a 2nd degree for me and in my first degree (biology) they told us to start looking for jobs about 5 or 6 months before we graduate. I know that's not the same with nursing, but I'm not sure when to start applying and contacting places I'd like to work. I graduate in December, but I don't know how long it will take me to get my license. Technically, NJ doesn't let you work as a graduate nurse, but some hospitals here have programs where they hire you and start training you once you've graduated and passed the NCLEX. Any suggestions?

I went to nursing school in New Jersey, and a great many of my classmates had jobs lined up before graduation. As you said, there is no temp license in NJ, but some places will hire you with employment pending on your passing the NCLEX.

You graduate in December, but it certainly doesn't hurt to start looking now. Good luck in your search! :)

It's (almost) never too early to contact a hospital, tell them of your interest, and ask them for some basic information. That brings you to the attention of the recruiters and gives you an opportunity to take your time to investigate things thoroughly before making a decision.

When you contact the recruiters, ask them what their prefered timetable is. Different hospitals (recruiters) may have different preferences. Let their answers be your guide for each specific instititution.
