I hate my job =(

Nurses Career Support

I'm a new grad RN, just graduated in July. In my area, it's really difficult (if not impossible) to land a hospital position unless you have connections in that hospital. And I had none. So out of desperation, I took a position in LTC facility. I've been there two months and I absolutely hate it. The job itself isn't that bad. It's not what I want to be doing, since my dream job was ICU or ER, but it's not that bad. What I really hate is the integrity of the company I work for. They don't stand behind their employees AT ALL. The work and patient load is at a dangerous level, to a point where I feel uncomfortable and worried my entire shift. I've been up to 40 patients before...and that was only on my second week working there...14 whole days of being a real nurse. I've brought my concerns all the way up to the building manager and nothing has ever been done. I'm still actively looking for a hospital position, but I'm not having any luck. I wanna quit so bad, but I don't want it on my resume that I worked somewhere for two months and quit. I'm also enrolled in a BSN program that requires me to maintain employment as a RN throughout the program. So I'm stuck. Every time I go into work, I'm worried something is gonna happen and I'm gonna lose my license. The older nurses like to use the couple of us new nurses as scapegoats when they do something wrong, so we're often being accused of something we didn't do and the whole environment is just miserable. I got chewed out and written up because of something the nurse on the shift before me did, but of course they don't believe I had no idea what they were talking about because the other nurse had been there for 10+ years and had more credibility than me. So now I look like the whiny new grad who can't own up to her mistakes. I'm gonna ask to be dropped down to part time soon so I have to be there as infrequently as possible.

Sorry for for the long rant. I'm just so frustrated and don't know what to do. My husband is in the military and actively looking to get us transferred to a different state where I have a better chance of getting in the hospital, but it's no guarantee. I'm so fed up.

Specializes in Psychiatry, Community, Nurse Manager, hospice.

That sucks. Hang in there. You are on your way to something better.

I say keep looking and applying daily, long term care can be really hard on you. I know I've been a nurse in LTC for 7yrs and I've finally had enough.

Specializes in Allergy/ENT, Occ Health, LTC/Skilled.

Welcome to LTC :( It can be stressful because of the ratios - although yours sounds ridiculous. 40:1?! Are these rehab patients, long term, or AL? In LTC and SNF I will not take positions with rations over 1:25, it's just too much after that.

I am sorry that you are going through this. Just try to document as accurate as you can so that when people try to blame things on you there is proof and you can protect yourself.

One of my professors once told me that we should all strive to be change agents in our organizations but if we do our best and nothing seems to be changing and it is taking an effect on you, then leave.

If you cannot get into a hospital at this time, don't give up. But I would also tell you that you should look for employment in a different LTC facility since it's much easier to get your foot in the door than most hospitals. You will still face staffing and nurse: patient ratios issues there as well.

In every field there will be difficult people to work with. While you are there now, find a way to work with these people. Schedule a meeting with your manager and these people to discuss issues.
