Help! Student/SAHM trying to create a resume!

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi everyone. I am new here and hoping someone can give me some useful advice. I'm currently a student finishing my pre-reqs for the nursing program at my local community college. I am also certified as a medical coder and desiring to work as a coder again while attending school. My problem is I have been a SAHM for the last 10 years. I have many years of coding experience, but haven't held a job since 1999! I've been attending school for 1.5 yrs now, so at least I have current education I can list. What do I do about work experience? 10 years is a big gap! Thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer.

Does anyone have any answers? I too am in the same boat and would love to learn how to go about doing this.

Cheesecakelady, I did a resume where I listed the last job I held with a summary of my responsibilities. I was hoping that would work - in the mean time I have been home (from 2002) raising my kids (5-4-2) and will be starting the nursing program in May. I have just sent out a resume to a woman I spoke to - so we'll see how that goes!

My best advice is to call around - tell them your situation - and make sure to get a name so you have someone to mail your resume too. After to speaking with several hospitals, all sounded pretty grateful for calling them first to see what was available for my situation. Two hospitals told me flat out that I wouldn't be a fit for their hospital due to lack of nursing experience but to call after a year of clinicals. One hospital did sound very promising, but after they see my resume. So we'll see where that takes me.

Wishing you the best!
