Cannot decide!

Nurses Career Support

Published

I am a sophomore in college and I am having the hardest time deciding on a major. I can't decide between global affairs and nursing. Which are completely different...both seem so incredibly interesting. However...I have some doubts about nursing and I was hoping someone could assist me or give me some advice.

Nursing (or anything in the medical field) has always appealed to me. I just do not know if I am the right person for the job. Since I was 12 I have been depressed on and off (now medicated). I am affected very deeply by others' pain and suffering. How do nurses deal with this on a daily basis? Are you able to detach yourself somehow? I don't want my career to send me into a depression. I would love to be a nurse, but I don't know what type of personality someone has to have to in order to do it.....

I am not afraid or blood or anything like that...I can handle ANYTHING except for puke. I know how ridiculous this sounds. But I assume one gets over their phobias when they encounter them so much in their job?

If anyone has any advice to give me...it would be greatly appreciated. I consider global affairs to be somewhat of an emotionally safer major--although definitly not as interesting or amazing as nursing.

I don't know!

Good luck making your decision, and welcome to allnurses! :)
