Are all nursing schools fulltime?

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi,

I am interested in going back to school. I am 36,married, and have 2 children. I have only a High School diploma. I know I am going to have to take some basic courses before even being considered for any type of program no matter what I decide. Here are my questions.

1.What exactly are pre-reqs?

2.If accepted into Nursing school is there such a thing as going part-time?

3.Some areas have evening classes for Nursing. What times are your classes in your area if this is the case?

4.Can someone point me to any links on this board where there may be some stories from people who went back to school at a late age and became a RN.

As you can tell by my questions I am at the early stages of making any sort of decision. Right now I am working a 12hr rotating swing shift and need to find a new job wehre I can take classes. I have no idea what is ahead of me but I do know that I am tired of spinning my wheels at my current job and desire to help people in some shape or form in the Medical field. I am not entirely sure if RN is for me or x-ray tech. The whole idea of going back to school is scary and I hope and pray that God opens a path for me.

Peace Be With You, T:)

oops, I think I posted my questions in the wrong forum. Mods, feel free to move to another section.

Regards,T:)

1.what exactly are pre-reqs? they are courses you must complete before being eligible for the nursing program. varies considerably depending on school. sometimes called "co-reqs" if they can be taken at the same time as some of the nursing components.

2.if accepted into nursing school is there such a thing as going part-time? yes, but you should expect that to vary, too. my school, for instance, could start you out part-time, but by the time you were at the last year, it had to be full time because that's the amount of credits you'd have to take to graduate. that was for everyone, even if they had been part time up until then. check with the school you are interested in.

3.some areas have evening classes for nursing. what times are your classes in your area if this is the case? doesn't matter; you'd have to check with your school to see what they offer. i've seen 12-8, 4-8, 4-10, etc.

4.can someone point me to any links on this board where there may be some stories from people who went back to school at a late age and became a rn. gosh, just do a search, and you'll find tons. it doesn't seem like it's ever more than a week before someone is posting yet another thread on that topic!

best of luck to you. since rn and xray tech are about a planet apart in their job descriptions, responsibilities, scope, etc, i'd suggest seeing if you could shadow someone at your local hospital in each position. then you'd get a feel for what you are interested in. they aren't even close to the same, so i'd strongly suggest spending some time with each before looking at schools.

thanks for the response. i do realize that xray and rn are "about a planet apart". i have some time before i even need to worry about choosing because i am going to have to start out with some basic courses. it has been a while since i went to school and know that it will be a little while before i can even start on any sort of pre-reqs no matter what path i choose.

by the way. i ended up finding a section with a bunch of stories from people who went back to school later in life.
